Increasing European lighting resources and competitiveness

The view below of lighting entities in Spain is just an extract and hence not fully adequate, but it displays some of the most important institutions and organizations – except from these whose websites are only in Spanish.

Research Institute on Energy, IREC

The Lighting Group

  • The research areas of the Lighting Group comprise lighting materials and control systems, as well as photometry and colourimetry. The vision responds to the pressing need on a worldwide level to reduce energy consumption used for lighting, which accounts for approximately 20 percent of total power consumption. The Group is represented on all points of the pipeline or value chain, which places it in an excellent position for conducting research, as well as for assessing and transferring technology to businesses in the sector. Thus, in 2010 the group devoted a great deal of its research efforts to new materials and concepts, which have now been taken into more advanced phases in preparation for the launch of differentiated products on the market.

The Institute of Photonic Sciencies, ICFO

  • ICFO is a young research institution that aims to advance the very limits of knowledge in photonics, namely the science and technology of harnessing light. Light, especially laser light, is one of the major enabling technologies currently available to humankind. Our research programs target the global forefront of photonics, and aim to tackle important challenges faced by society at large. We focus on current and future problems in Health, Energy, Information, Safety, Security and caring for the Environment.
